According to Hollings, a digital media device is any kind of software or device which produces and trnsfers signals and signs so that they are visual or audible. So common sense would lead to the most basic form of digital communication being 'Morse code.' Morse code is a combination of audio signals and visual signs which inevitably transcribe a message to the receiver.
Another form of digital technologies which are not electrical are telegrams. The telegram is considered digital because once again it transcribes a message to the receiver, of numbers, letters, words and/or symbols.
The third digital device which I believe to be considered in the not electronic category is the abacus. The abacus is a way of communicating numbers and letter to the small audience around the general area of the instrument itself. The abacus uses symbols and manual actions to digitally portray numbers to be viewed. It is a way of communicating the language of counting.
